HUNTING SKILLS
Thursday the 26th of June. Only three of us went hunting this morning.
Too bad for the other guys because we saw the most beautiful sunrise!
We didn't see too much until we were getting ready to leave. The elk
started coming over the mountain on the horizon with the sun shining on
them ( what a sight! ). Overall we still saw about forty plus elk but they
were too far away to tell if any were bulls. We returned back to camp
where we packed up and moved to Little Sheep Creek. The ride, the view
of the country, everything is so beautiful! On the downside, it takes a toll
on a green horn like me but it's worth it! After camp was set up and a
great meal was served it made for a short hunt. Game was still sighted.
We saw a 5x5 bull with a little rag horn, a few scattered cows and a
couple of moose.
TIM'S QUOTE CONT'D
Friday the 27th of June. We got an early start on
the morning hunt. We spotted five nice bull elk,
one bull moose, three cow moose and a moose
calf. We also spotted six other bull elk and
several nice mule deer. In the afternoon we went
on a ride up to about 9500 feet in altitude. We
saw a nice six point bull elk and fifteen head of
other elk about eight hundred yards ahead of us.
In the evening we all went hunting. As the sun
was going down for the last time on our trip we
spotted six bull elk, a bear sow with two little
cubs walking across an opening, five buck mule
deer and one doe.
Saturday the 28th of June. We got an early start on the day. We packed up camp and
ventured home. A lot of guys are tired, sore and ready to go, but myself, I wish I could
stay forever in the land of the Big Sky Country.
In the days after our trip, reflecting back, I tried to count the animals we saw. To the
best of my knowledge I came up with a total of fifty seven bull elk, one-hundred eighty
seven plus cow and calf elk, 6 bull moose, eleven cow and calf moose, three bear with two
cubs, seven nice mule deer bucks and numerous mule deer doe. Overall that is a total of
two-hundred seventy plus animals within six short hunting days! It makes you kind of
wonder if a bunch of green horns saw that many animals, how many did we miss?"
This few day testimony is the words and work of
Tim Vogt a student of the Rocky Mountain School
second session of 2003. Wishing those of you who
read this the best of luck and hope you enjoy the
scenery as much as I did.
Hunting the west is very different or should be than most anywhere else. We spend quality
time teaching how to bugle, cow call and read country and winds. Many of the animals seen
this summer we have on video, which prove these methods work.
We also have been doing well on our mock sheep and goat hunts.
Where again we teach how to locate and field score. On these
outings it is not uncommon to find elk, deer, bear and moose also.
