HUNTING SKILLS
Hunting skills are obviously very important as a guide. At our Montana Hunting Guide School we teach with a strong emphasis on archery and rifle hunting.
The second class of 2003 had
quite a thrill as a spring bear
hunt unfolded before their eyes.
As one student accompanied Phil,
the others watched from 400
yards as Phil harvested this bear
at 80 yards. Using the spot and
stalk method that we teach at
R.M.S. Using wind thermals this
hunt was successful.
What can you expect to
see for game when you
come to the R.M.S.?
Before one can learn to
hunt the west it is
important to be able to
see numbers of animals
so as to build that game
eye. Especially for elk
and mule deer. For this
we have excellent
country we take our
students into. We have
been seeing an average
of 60 bull elk most 5 & 6
point. Also we see many
respectable muley bucks
not counting the
numerous cow elk and
doe mule deer.
Listen to Tim Vogt as he describes the 2nd pack trip in 2003.
" Three weeks of school already done, where does the time
go? We learned so much that I don't know where to start.
Today is the 23rd of June, the start of our week long pack
trip. The sun is coming up more beautiful than ever! I don't
know if it's the sun, or the fact that for the next week ( I'm
speaking for myself ) we get to put all we learned to good use
in the mountains. What a great place to be! We have the
livestock saddled, packed and now it is time to get to the
mountains. On the way in, we saw four moose before we even
got to our first camp site. That evening we went hunting for a
little bit. We located four real big bull elk. It was very
exciting to see because they were the biggest ones I've ever
seen in the wilds! For that evening we saw a total of eleven
bull elk, seventy plus cows and calves, eight moose and a few
scattered deer. We also saw a fawn drink from its mom
( pretty cool).
Tuesday the 24th of June, it rained all day but a few guys
made it out for the evening hunt. They located five bull elk,
five more bulls with a cow and fifty plus cow elk. Jeff and
three students decided to put a stalk on some of the bulls.
With three cow calls they got within six yards of two of the
bulls. The bulls weren't huge, 5x5 and a 5x4, but they didn't
care. They were pretty pumped up when they returned to
camp.
Wednesday the 25th of june. This morning everybody slept
in so our morning hunt was pretty short. Overall we had a
good hunt. We saw eleven bull elk ( 5x5 or smaller ) and forty
plus cows and calves. When we returned to camp we moved
to a new location which was Little Beaver Creek. Four of the
guys went for an evening hunt. While sitting in camp we
watched a big black bear run up the side of the mountain.
The bear was within forty yards of the guys that were out
hunting! When they returned they reported seeing a monster
bull moose, twenty plus cows, and several calves. They were
too far away to tell if any of them were bulls.
